The Great Ice Bear Adventure 7 Days / 6 nights
Trip Overview
Our Great Ice Bear adventure is focused on just that- our world’s largest land carnivore, the boldly beautiful polar bear. The fall is official polar bear season in the Churchill area as some 1,200 of these perfect predators congregate along the Coastline. They are patiently waiting for the ice formation to allow them passage further north to their ideal hunting grounds. It is a time of angst for the bears and one of immense excitement for the thousands of admirers they draw from all over the world.Trip Images

This trip has it all: a unique wilderness lodge; polar bears; Aurora & photo experts!

Away from Churchill, there is a chance of seeing Aurora Borealis - 'Northern Lights'

You will have a chance to study the bears. Normally these creatures are solitary…

A mom and cubs in the snow.

The bears are all around the lodge - sometimes they even want to come in!

However, inside all is warm, cozy - and secure!

An expert photographer is on hand to help you get shots like these…

And improve your skills so it looks like you are this close.

There is also other wildlife in the area, like wolves, wolverines - and this arctic fox.

And the scenery is spectacular! This is a 'white rainbow' over Dymond Lake.

Detailed Itinerary
Day 1 – Arrive in WinnipegArrive in Winnipeg at your leisure where you will enjoy a relaxing stay at a hotel in Winnipeg. You’ll need your rest for your early morning departure to Churchill.
Day 2 - Arrive in Polar Bear Country
Arrive in the charming northern town of Churchill, by air. Upon arrival you will have a short orientation to make sure you have all equipment, clothing needed before you fly by helicopter or small fixed winged aircraft to the Dymond Lake Lodge. Enjoy the views of the barren tundra on your way up to the lodge.
Your friendly hosts will be waiting inside to welcome you to the lodge. Drop your bags off at your rooms and enjoy a brief workshop on being in polar bear country. This day will include a guided hike along the coastline, an interpretative slide show featuring the wildlife of Hudson Bay, and hopefully a clear night for viewing the Northern Lights.
Day 3 & 4 – Explore the Tundra and see Polar Bears
The smell of freshly brewed coffee drifts into your room and wakes you in time for a hearty Canadian breakfast. From Wild Blueberry Pancakes to Caribou bacon you’ll be full and ready for your day on the ice.
Join your naturalist guide for a day with the bears. Most mornings begin with a walking tour however can be delayed if there are any bears right at camp, which does happen frequently, so you do not have to go far to capture the right photograph! The walks are comfortably paced as they are geared to plenty of viewing and photograph opportunities. Depending on the weather you will most likely enjoy your lunches out in the field, returning to the lodge in late afternoon. The evenings are spent enjoying a full coruse dinner followed by informative lectures, slide presentations or just discussions on your next days activities.
Day 5 – Say goodbye to your lodge as it’s back to Churchill
After your warming breakfast, it’s time to pack your bags for your flight back to Churchill where you will transferred for to a hotel for the night.
The remainder of the day is then free for you to explore the town of Churchill on own. You can also choose to do an excursion this day such as dogsledding or a helicopter tour. Places to visit are the Parks Canada Exhibit, the Eskimo Museum and the Polar Bear Jail!
Day 6 – Tundra Buggy Tour
This morning you will be picked up and taken to the Tundra Buggy launch pad for your day excursion out to see the polar bears on the Tundra. Capture the perfect photo so be sure to have room on your memory card. You could see as many as 30 bears today, making this the perfect ending to an already amazing vacation. You’ll return in the afternoon for an evening flight back to Winnipeg. Overnight in Winnipeg.
Day 7 – Depart with Fond Memories
With fond memories and the best photos, you’ll leave your hotel in Winnipeg after your final breakfast.
