Up Close With A Grizzly Bear

Grizzly bear cub turns to face the camera as he fishes
‘An ambling bear,
Four-footed in berries’…
Earle Birney, Canadian poet.

Hikers in Canada’s woods regard the idea of getting up close with a Grizzly Bear as something to be avoided if at all possible – because they are fierce and unpredictable predators.

But in a few places on the west coast of Canada it is possible to observe these magnificent animals up close from the comfort of a boat or an elevated hide…
In the estuary of Knight Inlet in particular there are large grassy flats where the bears come down to hunt at certain times of the year, and in the fall they can be seen up nearby rivers engaged in what is surely one of the most wonderful of natural scenes – catching migrating salmon as they leap upstream.

In nearby Johnstone Strait you will also get the chance to observe Orca or Killer Whales – one of the most intelligent and fascinating creatures to see in the wild.

And you’ll see lots of Bald Eagles and even, on some trips, have the chance to swim with salmon, and try sea-kayaking – a wonderful way to explore the rich inter-tidal life on this part of the coast.
