A Loon’s Call In Cottage Country

families relax on the beach and watch as the sun sets above the forest of the Canadian shield in Ontario’s cottage country
As legend has it, when Canadian soldiers were away in Europe during the First World War they sometimes were played two sounds to remind them of home – the lonesome whistle of a train, and the call of a loon.

The high-pitched, wavering call of a loon is unique and haunting – and for we Canadians it is the essence of the peace and wildness of their homeland…
For Canadians, cottage country means a rustic holiday home on a lake, where you spend long summer days reading, relaxing, swimming in warm water, boating and fishing – and life is generally very good…

And in the early evening, when the activities of the day are winding down and the sun is setting on a still lake you may hear a loon call…

And sometimes at night, when the moon is up, the call of a loon to its mate will lull you to sleep…
