A Polar Bear Encounter

The tundra buggy at Churchill with three polar bears walking across in front
For the natural history enthusiast this is one of the ‘must see’ wildlife experiences. When the brief Arctic summer is over polar bears gather on the western shores of Canada’s Hudson Bay waiting for the great freeze to begin…

And it is there, for a few short weeks each fall, that you have the opportunity to study one of the world’s most awesome predators in its natural habitat with an expert naturalist…
Polar bears are curious creatures and sometimes when you go out to see them in a specially adapted ‘Tundra Buggy’ they will come up to your vehicle and you will literally be nose-to-nose – but don’t be tempted to try to pat them.

You will learn from your guide about the ferociousness of these hunters and how they have learned to survive in one of the harshest climates on earth. And you’ll also learn what you can do to help them, now that they have been officially designated as ‘endangered’ by the US government.

The nearest town to the bears is Churchill and you can get there by air or train – and many people choose to fly one way and take the train the other.

And our polar bear journeys are much more than just about the bears. You will also learn about all other kinds of Arctic wildlife and gain an insight into the fascinating culture of the north, as well as have a chance to try dog sledding as the Inuit do it…
